Notes: It's probably clear by now to regular listeners that my songs will be primarily concerned with the experience of getting to know my son and becoming a parent for the foreseeable future. This project has always been fairly autobiographical, and this is what is going on in my life. If that topic is interesting to you, keep coming back each week!

Meanwhile, Forest finally came home from the hospital! We are so thrilled to be finding our family's rhythm at home, and I'm sure I will have reflections on that topic in the near future. But this song was written when we were still in the midst of our four-week long odyssey in NICU and the Continuing Care Nursery.

Forest's life began under heavy surveillance, wired up to monitor his vital signs, with tubes for oxygen (for a short while) and to help administer feeding (for his whole stay). Alarms and alerts would sound at all hours of the day and night, the vast majority of which only indicated only a faulty connection of some kind. He lived in a fishbowl environment with only a thin curtain to block the eyes of strangers, and to dim the persistent lights and sounds of a busy hospital. We stayed there with him, at least one of us at his side nearly twenty four hours a day with only a few exceptions.
It was a weird way to live.

But it was also wonderful, because it was where we got to know Forest. Amidst the often oppressive strangeness of it all, there was this dazzling new life to behold, the brightest star in our sky, totally new and fully unique from the moment he arrived. I I will remember it always two ways: strange and beautiful, both at the same time.
