Notes: The photo that accompanies this song is of a strange camera obscura effect produced in the shadow of a tree, casting numerous bending arcs of light through the gaps of the branches, each arc a projection of today's solar eclipse as it neared totality. Remember those pinhole cameras that you used in elementary school to watch the eclipse on the back of a shoebox? The shadow of the tree did the exact same thing today. Nature is amazing.

My son won't look at an eclipse through a pinhole camera in elementary school. Solar eclipses over the U.S. are going on hiatus for twenty years. I remember my pinhole camera as a magical and revelatory moment in my childhood. He will likely reach adulthood before he has a chance to fashion his own. That's okay. Every childhood is different, and I suspect that magic and celestial wonder will be revealed to him in his own unique way. Meanwhile, I can't predict where he will be on August 23rd, 2044, but I plan to make sure he circles the date in his calendar.
