“Like a Good Thing” is a substantial departure from my usual fare. It abandons a pop structure for a slow and deliberate build over two chords. The idea is that the build of the song takes place slowly enough that it isn’t necessarily noticed until it has happened. Suddenly it is the end of the song and two quiet chords on the guitar have become an interwoven mess of sounds, and it isn’t entirely clear when it happened. That was my purpose, and you can be the judge of how successful I was at pulling it off. The words are about attraction and vulnerability and how the two are inextricably linked. It is a meandering poem about the fear, embarrassment, courage and relief involved in making one’s feelings known.
lyrics
Like you’re bleeding
Like you’re teething
Like you’re certain
Like a curtain
Like you’re working
Like instructions
Like destruction
Like perfection
Like connection
Like reaction
Like attraction

Like you’re pacing
Like your play thing
Like you’re praying
Like you’re staying
Like a bee sting
Like a sunbeam
Like a wet dream
Like a good thing
