The title of this song is misleading. This song is not a political song. It is not even really about the election at all. Not in any literal sense. An election year is a year that everything hinges on. I have taken that concept and stretched it as broadly as I could. Everything can hinge on a year for a country, a community, a friendship, a relationship, a family, an institution, an individual. Anything really. When that is the case the feeling that year is like that of an election year: uncertainty, electricity, emotional highs and lows, constant revision of prospects. Thats really what I’m talking about here; a period of kinetic uncertainty. Sometimes those are the years we remember most vividly.
This week I went robotic. The tune is fully automated, and several of the parts can’t actually be played by human beings. At least not by me. That is one of the fun things about making music on a computer: it is possible to cheat.
lyrics
We got a way we want to see
We’ve got a million other ways
Got trouble peering through the dark
We’ve got a game we’ve gotta play
We’ve got descendants on the way
We’ve got a country on the move
We’ve got the knowledge it gets hard
We’ve got a lesson we can use
Can you live well enough to forgive?
Enough have done it for you
Can you speak to your heart getting weak?
A muscle dying for use
Can you trust any one feeling enough?
Could be that one gets you through
Everybody wants to move
Everybody needs a way
Everybody breaks the rules
Everybody’s gone away
Nobody’s gotta burn you now
Nobody’s gotta break
Nobody’s got a piece of you
Nobody knows the way
Can you live well enough to forgive?
Enough have done it for you
Can you speak to your heart getting weak?
A muscle dying for use
Can you trust any one feeling enough?
Could be that one gets you through
