Notes: For the past several months, I've been going to great lengths to write about my feelings concerning a big, unavoidable topic in my life without actually mentioning it. The topic is the baby that we're expecting! It's generally not a great idea to talk about it a lot before you reach certain milestones, hence my caginess and secrecy. So that's out of the bag now!
I genuinely thought the first song that I would write to our child would be fairly more thoughtful and intentional than this one. I figured I would sit with it for a long time, and ruminate on the seriousness, importance, and profundity of the opportunity. But tonight as I sat to write, this little song spilled forth before I could argue with it. I'm glad for that.
I'll have plenty of time to write the heirloom I wish to bestow upon this baby. Meanwhile, here's a simple and true song. I'm not perfect and I don't know everything, but I will love this child, and I will do my very best to do right by this child, and I will show this child as many good things as I can about the world. That's all for today. I'm certain there will be many more to come!
lyrics
Simple as all things
Simple as true
Hold out your hand
I'll give this to you
I'll give you the first song
I'll give you the facts
I carried this with me
All the way back
Oh all the way back
Oh all the way back
I don't know all things
Like I haven't met you
I can't say I've climbed Everest
That wouldn't be true
But I've seen some good things
So let's start with that
Let's count our good fortune
All the way back
Oh all the way back
Oh all the way back
