Notes: I had most of this track completed about a week and a half ago, but I was hesitant to finish it. I stuck it in my back pocket, and I didn't know whether it would stay there for a couple of weeks or a couple of months. That happens sometimes. It turned out that a planned third verse was supposed to be a guitar solo all along. I'm pretty pleased with that solo, so as soon as it fell into place, the arrangement felt better to me. After that, the lyrics arrived.
I'm singing about time and worries and money and changes. Stuff grownups think about. I'm also singing about a bit of perspective that came from visiting my old city, and calculating distance I have already traveled from the person I was when I still lived there. It was a great visit, but it's good it was just that. As for this song, I'm glad I took my time.
lyrics
The way the rain scatters light on the road
Little spirits trying to make it home
Then I woke up last week in New York
Nice to be back but it's a lot of work
Sometimes strangers can set me off
Wait
I wasn't always that way
I saw flowers on the trees in the park
Little angels speaking after dark
I might never be richer this
I lose balance over that abyss
Pulling phrases from bank accounts
Wait
Life wasn't always that way
Little spirits pull me along
Wait
Time wasn't always this way
