I've been feeling like I've been in a bit of a rut with my songwriting lately. It's okay. It happens. Sustaining pure artistic engagement for 648 weeks was never the point of this project. The point is to keep pushing forward to the next idea. Sometimes when I find myself in that rut, I try to change things up, and one good way to change things up is to try a new guitar tuning. I'm not here to say I couldn't have composed this song in one of the tunings I have used before. I'm not here to say I haven't created something similar in other songs. But the process of approaching the fretboard like an alien landscape is powerful. It makes me uncomfortable. It makes me think about what I'm doing. It makes me try a little harder. That's what I did today, and I had a good time doing it.
