People do this funny thing this time of year where they feign total disbelief, and ask incredulously, "Can you even believe it's already December?" They usually add some side remark that trails off, like, "It really feels like it was just summer... " before sighing, staring off into the middle distance, and ultimately snapping out of it in order to resume some other business. I like those funny routines that people repeat like clockwork each year. I like this one in particular because it cyclically marks the passage of time, and is also a half-hearted attempt to reckon with it. It was always just summer. It's always either almost or already December. That's ever the way it is.
lyrics
Greeting December already
Somebody always says it's too soon
A colleague's remark about holiday shopping
Somebody always says it's too soon
All year
The whole year
It comes down to this
Nobody ever sees it coming
The wheel always turns
Whatever you do
