about

Notes: Another year has gone by! This week marks 12 years of this weekly writing and recording project. To celebrate, I have compiled a free download of my favorite tracks from the past year, 28 of them in total. I'm not sure if people still download music. If you do, head to linktr.ee/mounteverestmusic to get it!

This was a year of change for me. Much of my writing was focused on the decision to move away from Brooklyn, and the emotional journey of following through with that decision. Listening back to the year's songs, I've tried to have the final word on the subject several times. I always fell short or found another angle. I imagined that I would dig deep into it someday after the move. That's what this song is for me. I doubt there will ever be a final word. After all, leaving a place that has become home after 9 years is a whole thing.

I always like to use these anniversary posts as an opportunity to say thank you. If I were to get specific about it, I am grateful to far too many people to list. I will forget someone and feel awful, so if you have ever collaborated, listened, shared a link, or liked a post, I'm grateful and I keep doing this because of you. I am most indebted to my my wife, Rebecca, and my parents, Nancy and Gene. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your stalwart love, support, and encouragement. Also, today is my brother Eben's birthday! Happy Birthday, Eben!

I'm excited to put my roots down here in Maine, and to find out what my music sounds like as that happens. If you'd like to find out with me, I'll be back with a new song next week. Thanks for being here, and thanks for listening.

lyrics

I need a way to get in
Or maybe a rock to climb under
I want to trace where connections grow
Spending the day with each other
Follow our steps anywhere they go
Or reject every change we uncover

Hey nobody's hiding the test they're in
I doubt anyone can when they're in it
I'm out here saying goodbye in a way
I'll be in in a minute

I need a way to look out
We've got to look out for each other
A window's a frame around anything
If there's something out there to discover

What if leaving's the easiest thing we'll do?
If the river out there is an ocean
We can choose our heading two by two
And accept what the wind puts in motion

It's time to leave
It's time to leave
It's time to leave
It's time to leave
