This week I wrote a sleepy song about dreaming. The song is concerned with the ephemeral quality of dreams. It doesn't matter if a dream is beautiful or heartbreaking, it's hard to hold onto most of them. They like to leave in a hurry. Of course, there are those that linger, but most mornings I'm grasping for what was a complete and convincing circumstance just moments earlier. Depending on the substance of the dream, I may be left disappointed or relieved that it has left me. Either way, I spend the morning pondering what worlds I have left behind as I reacquaint myself with my waking reality.
lyrics
Later on I'll fall asleep
And dream that life's a song
I'll be amazed
The simple melody
Floats around everyone
Then the harmony and counterpoint...
Later on I'll dream I'm crying
Ensnared by something wrong
I'll be afraid it'll last forever
Or take me when it's gone
Such relief that dreams are nothing more
Every night breaks into morning
Everybody knows
You'll be amazed
How fast a dream fades
The moment that it goes
Holding onto what?
You're never sure
