When I wrote the first verse of this song, it was about taking pleasure in staying in for the night. It was a simple song about enjoying the peace and solace of our apartment, and spending time with my wife. When I wrote the second verse, it changed into a song about taking a lesson from the more tranquil moments I experienced during lockdown. Despite the chaos of the world outside, the experience made me slow down a lot, and it helped me focus more on my partner. If the world ever really goes back to "normal", I don't want to lose those lessons. This song was a useful exercise to remind myself of what I want to take with me into the new world.
lyrics
I'm in the mood to stay in
What do I need that ain't here?
I feel like watching the light in the window shift as the hour changes
You're coming home for the night
I put something on the table
I'll pour us a glass of wine and we'll raise it up to the open spaces
We can settle in while the world does what it likes
Of course that's fine
Whatever that may be
From the vast expanse all the way to the city lights
Let's stay behind
Absent and free
Wherever we come from
If we ever go back again
Let's hold onto a piece of the way we were when the season took us
When we settled in and the world kept spinning on
And we made do
I think we did alright
Now when things get wild out there and the world seems strange
I'll say to you
Let's stay in tonight
