about

I met my wife 15 years ago when we were students at the same college. We would be close friends for a number of years before we became romantically connected. When our relationship finally rounded that important corner, I know that neither of us expected one day to see each other through the existential quagmire that has been life in 2020 and 2021. We promised to help each other through the hard days. Nobody really knows what that promise means when they make it.

If you have shared your space with another person through this event, you know them better than you would have. Perhaps they know you better than you might prefer. I think back to 2006. I think about explaining to us what a strange journey we would one day share. I think of that, and I ponder what days we have yet to imagine. We still know so little, but at least we know each other. Thank goodness.

lyrics

We once learned each other's names
They once were foreign on our tongues
And all the ages we became
We'd not yet willed us to become

And all the futures left for us
Were broad and alien and strange
And none were subjects we discussed
When we first learned each other's names
My dear

Are we all children of a war?
We're smudged on pages of a fight
And did I see you once before?
Was that you carrying the light?

And could I carry that for you?
It's been aloft from where you came
To fathom what we'd travel through
When we first learned each other's names
My dear

The colors captured in the night
Your shoulders high against the wind
It's been a while since things were right
The boiling moment we're all in

And all the moments left for us
Grow wild and beautiful and strange
And none were subjects we discussed
When we first learned each other's names
My dear
