This is my final song of 2020—my last report from the trenches of the weirdest year yet. Just now, I stopped short of writing that this song would be my final word on the year. How could it possibly be? I imagine that I'll reflect on this strange time for many years to come, and that living through all of this bad business will inform my identity and perspective through song as long as I live and write. This won't be an easy page to turn, as much as we'd like it to be.
This song attempts to imagine that things will indeed get better, but it stops short of guessing when and how that might happen, or what things will be like when it does. For now, I think it will suffice to say that we've lived through profoundly dark days, but the sun is bound to shine again. I'm wishing you and yours a safe, healthy, and happy new year. Eyes to the future. We can make it a nice place to live.
lyrics
Bits of paper
On the wind
Swirl around us
And within
Scraps of ideas
All the ways
Conversations
Other days
Look around you
All the change to come
I'm sure the sun will return
Other winters
Other springs
Sleeping later
What it brings
Wake to find
A different time
Constellations
Other skies
Look around you
All the change to come
I'm sure the sun will return
