Notes: Whenever folks would ask me what it's like to write a song every week, I always used to answer that "it's cheaper than therapy." When in the fall of 2019, I finally decided it was time that I found a professional with whom I could talk, I was forced to retire that rote response. I haven't reflected openly on my time in therapy in this space. I'd say the reason is that it's too personal for public consumption, except this project remains every bit as personal as my weekly sessions. I can certainly confirm that many of the insights that have provided the scaffolding for my past year's songwriting have come from engaging in that particular form of self care. This song is an appreciative note to the process I've been working through. Much like this project, it's a climb, but it's a good climb.
lyrics
Lyrics:
Ghosts that wake you up
In the middle of the night
The words they say to you
Scratch the surface of the light
And all the answers
Left in driveways in the dark
And every question
And an ellipsis from the start
On the way up
All the way up
A good climb from here
Ghosts that speak to you
In the quiet of the day
It's okay to ask of them
If a kinder word they could say
On the way up
All the way up
A good climb from here
