Even as Rebecca and I have experimented with cautious ways of seeing friends and being with people, there is no doubt that we have a long way to go before our social lives resemble something like they were as recently as February. There are nice things about it it. Being in a cocoon together is cozy, after all. At the same time, everybody outside of the cocoon can seem a little threatening. This is a song about holding both a fear of, and a desire for branching out. It is about recognizing fortune in having somebody in the cocoon, but also looking out your window and sensing the lure and familiarity of the world, even as you feel the power of your alienation and suspicion of it. Strange days, indeed.
lyrics
In the evening
No one chasing after us
Playing records all night long
Nothing like us
If we barter with the dark
If we gamble with the spark
Nothing like us
Nothing stands the way they've been
But nothing steals what heaven sent to us
They look just like us
They talk the same as you and I
They're in the corner of your eye
Nothing like us
Nothing stands the way they've been
But Nothing steals what heaven sent to us
