Here we have a gentle ode to escape, penned from the perspective of a passenger falling asleep under the weight of exhaustion in the glow of anticipation. For me, autumn means escape. It means reconvening with people that fill my heart with hope for the coming year. It means trading concrete for hills and forests for a little while, and trying to take the forest with me again when I return. I go away to reach for an old part of my heart that will always live among the trees, and will always feel most at home with a campfire and a song. I go away to nourish relationships and perspectives that the city cannot sustain. I have just returned, and I am indeed renewed. The autumn has just begun, and though I revel in it, it has already fulfilled its purpose. Until next time.
lyrics
Spin the tires
Look not behind
If we're to flee before the dark
I'll fall asleep
To highway sounds
And wake to silence all around
Don't say a word
Tend the fire
And lift the stone
The ground is firm and thick with pitch
I'll fall asleep
With easy cares
And wake with laughter in the air
