This week I’ve got a little acoustic song that muses on the potential for growth in a new environment. As a fresh transplant to New York, I imagine that it will take me a few weeks worth of songs to sort out how I feel about living in this place. To be clear, the excitement hasn’t worn off, and the reality hasn’t set in. That said, it is undeniably jarring in contrast to the bucolic settings that I’m more accustomed to these days. Because of this, many of my observations tend toward what is “wrong for me” about this place. What is (at least superficially) “right” for me about it is a simpler idea that I already have a good grasp on. But I’m the guy who said again and again that this would never be right, and a voice in my head is reminding me of that fact at every turn. This song is an attempt to embrace the wrong thing. Perhaps all that makes something seem wrong for a person is an outdated concept of what is right. Perhaps the only way to learn that is by living in the middle of the “wrong” place and being open to it being exactly what it is.
lyrics
The air down here’s a little strange
It’s brimming with mankind’s invention
It settles on your skin
And as you settle in
You reexamine your intention
Wake up in a different place
Eyes adjusting to surroundings
Cold sweat, must be dawn
And what’s been going on?
The answer could just be astounding
Situation in the hot night
Revelation in the morning
Here goes something
If it ain’t right
Then you’re glad that you’ve found something wrong
You track the story of a life
Think of the roads and complications
They pushed one thousand ways
And pulled you to this place
An unanticipated station
You think you know yourself alright
You’re keen to your predispositions
Perhaps they’re out of date
And in this big hot place
You’ll understand a greater vision
Situation in a hot night
Revelation in the morning
Here goes something
If it ain’t right
Then you’re glad that you’ve found something wrong
