This week’s song is about a pretty simple idea. The idea is that nobody does it all by themselves. No matter who you are, and no matter how far you’ve come, you’ve had help. Some people might disagree with this idea, but trust me, those people would be wrong. Kindness from other people, no matter how great or small, is something that everyone relies on to survive. At some crucial moment, you reached out and somebody took hold. This song is a simple acknowledgment of this fact. I’m grateful for this notion, because so many people have shown me such tremendous kindness. It is my hope that by acknowledging this fact, we will more readily reach out and do the same for others when we can.
lyrics
Standing on top of the Earth
Standing on top
Of a mountain of doubt and it hurts
But you like it
Thinking of settling down
Thinking of ramping up
Really you’ll think ‘till you drown
That’s just like you
Tell me the story some day
Like right now at point B
How’d you get all the way from point A?
So unlikely
And stories ain’t true, like you said
What you tell yourself might seem real
Tell us the one in your head
It sounds good like that
That you woke up
And relied on the kindness around
What it looks like we do for ourselves is illusion
And how we persist is by reaching out
Always we’re reaching out
Staring out into the rain
Unconcerned with the flood
And in love with the sound that it makes
Like it’s music
Nothing is tied to the ground
And the water is rising up
Water is rising around
You can use it
And the storm isn’t finished just yet
No one lives through the flood
And survives without getting all wet
Who can help you now?
So you wake up
To rely on the kindness around
What it looks like we do for ourselves is illusion
And how we persist is by reaching out
Always we’re reaching out
