Often times when I come out with a song as short and sparse as this one I’ll make excuses about how it is a sketch of something bigger, and I’ll whine something like “ain’t it a shame that I didn’t have more time?” That isn’t the case this week. As I worked on this song it was obvious to me that I was putting together a small package, and that I was filling it with only what needed to be inside. This week’s song is a case of holding back for the good of a tune. Much like other short and quiet songs I have come up with, “Tiny Voices” feels like a meditation to me. It is a short rumination on the voices in your ear that pull you in one direction or another. They quietly get you where you need to be or lead you astray. You can put all the blame on them when you do poorly, and you can take all the credit when they point you in the right direction. They are simultaneously our muses and our scapegoats. Where would we be without them?
lyrics
Red tiny voices
Whisper all your choices
Like silence full of subtext
Like islands in the context
Spots in the sunshine
You look deep for a punch line
It burns you, but you laugh and say
You learn it all the hard way
