about

After a couple weeks of elaborate productions, I felt the need to scale things back a bit for Week 101. Every now and then I like to do one of these little Americana tunes. I like to give them a bit more twang in the vocal, a few more “ain’ts” where you least expect them, and a bit of a hop in the rhythm guitar. I think the first few bars of this song could easily be mistaken for about five Mount Everest songs, but that’s alright. Songs in this vein always seems to set themselves apart from one another someplace in the middle. The tune is about self awareness, and looking at yourself fresh. It talks about the fears, doubts, and longings that we all allow to get the best of us from time to time. The picture is from a very long time ago. I drew it as Sophomore in college. It isn’t altogether synergistic with the lyrics, except that I think the fellow in the drawing knows a thing or two about waiting for a feeling greater than himself. He’s a fellow who’s hangin’ in there, that’s for sure.

lyrics

I put my shoes on in the dark
I turn my engine over
Side of the yard
I wonder idly:
Ain’t it ever been this hard to get away?
And if it ain’t why not?

And have you caught yourself awake
Taking notes on concepts
Heaven at stake
Have you ever wondered idly:
Ain’t you gonna be okay?
And if you ain’t
You should know why not

I’m miles away
It’s nothing new
Except today
It’s feeling true
Like a metaphor
That’s got its legs
Forgetting what its for
I’m miles away

I see myself from someplace new
So unaware just how much dreaming I do
I wonder idly:
Ain’t they ever coming true?
And if they ain’t
Can I say why not?

And ain’t you ever been afraid?
Like a child frozen
Carried away
And ain’t you ever known a feeling
Greater than yourself
To wash it all away
I’m saying just you wait

I’m miles away
It’s nothing new
Except today
It’s feeling true
Like a metaphor
That’s got its legs
Forgetting what its for
I’m miles away
